Colds alone cause 22 million days of absence from school each year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and proper hand washing practices could help prevent the spread of colds. A new soap dispenser may help young children in schools, and daycare centers learn proper hand washing techniques and help reduce spread of colds and other diseases.
Proper hand washing technique requires two elements: sufficient friction with soap and water on all hand surfaces and time. Even when they use the proper technique on the surfaces of their hands, many people, especially young children, do not use the technique long enough during each washing.
The new Deb SBS soap dispenser provides them a highly visual suggestion on how to know they have washed enough each time. The dispenser has an illustration of a train engine pulling multi-colored letters of the alphabet. Underneath the train appears this message: "Sing Two Times While Washing Your Hands So You'll Know They're Clean!"
"Sally Sebastyn, our business development manager who does hand washing demonstrations in schools came up with the idea of putting the alphabet on the dispenser to help young children gauge how long to wash. We hope by having these dispensers in schools, daycare centers and other places, we can help reduce the spread of colds and other infectious diseases," said Rich Earle, marketing manager.
