California Awards First 'Green Schools' Funding Grant

The California State Allocation Board (SAB) has awarded $107,000 to the Animo Venice Charter High School in Los Angeles, making it the first school to receive a grant from the High Performance Incentive Grant program.

This California grant program earmarks $100 million for "green" school projects funded by Proposition 1D. The High Performance Incentive Grant is part of the $15.6 million the Board has awarded the school to fund the construction of the new campus, scheduled to begin in April.

"Green schools greatly improve the learning environments for kids while helping California meet Governor Schwarzenegger's goals for environmental responsibility," said Anne Sheehan, SAB chair and chief deputy director of Policy at the Department of Finance.

In December 2004, Gov. Schwarzenegger signed Executive Order S-20-04, ushering in the State's Green Building Initiative. The Executive Order encourages schools built with State funds to be energy-efficient, while creating safer and healthier learning environments.

"Energy efficiency is a key element in the design of California's schools, and studies show that students attending green schools are healthier and more productive," said Rob Cook, executive officer of the SAB/OPSC. "These schools emphasize a comfortable environment, full of natural light and air, with gardens, natural shading, reduced noise levels and lowered chemical emission rates from elements such as floor and wall coverings and janitorial products."

Sustainability was a critical factor in the design of the Animo campus. Osborn Architects, the Los Angeles-based architect firm that designed the school, incorporated several "green" features in various aspects of the facility and campus life.

World Contract Cleaning Services Market to Reach US$155.3 Billion by 2010

The World Contract Cleaning Services market is forecast to maintain a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.9 percent over the 2001-2010 period to reach US$155.3 billion by 2010, according to a survey by Global Industry Analysts, Inc.

Offices dominate the global market for Contract Cleaning Services, with a share estimated at 31.6 percent in 2007.

In long run, cleaning is considered a stable and growing market, while in the short term, there is very little effect of economic upheavals on this industry as cleaning is the last thing to be impacted in the economic cycle. In addition, the health and safety legislations restrict the companies and other sectors to cut back on cleaning activities, and the cost savings from removing cleaning activities from the basic job is very small.

Long-term drastic measures against cleaning activities are only taken when there are large-scale business failures. One of the possible reasons for long-term slowdown in the office-cleaning sector is that more and more office workers start working at home when there are business failures. These negatives are generally offset by the growing trends in facilities such as airports, major shopping centers, gyms and other public and private places.

The outsourced cleaning services are known as "Contract Cleaning Services." Cleaning services are lately being included in the support services and are apparently one of the commodity areas within this group. These services are also perceived to be a part of Facilities Management (FM), as today's customers' requirements include a number of support services.

The contract cleaning industry is labor intensive, wherein wages are the main cost borne by the service providers. Duration of cleaning contracts may vary from one year to several years. Contract cleaning service providers are exposed to growing competition, escalating insurance costs, volatile costs of supplies, and availability and sustenance of economical labor. A primary concern for the industry is the high rate of employee burnout, affecting the stability as well as growth of many service providers. Poor profit margins and intense competition from big, established companies drive out new entrants from the market.

Major companies covered in the report include ABM Industries Incorporated, Chem-Dry, Coverall Cleaning Concepts, Dublcheck, Ecolab, Inc., Horizon National Contract Services, LLC, Interserve plc, ISS (Integrated Service Solutions) A/S, JAN-PRO International, Jani-King International, Inc., JohnsonDiversey Inc., Medirest, Merry Maids, MITIE Group Plc, Pall Mall, OCS Group Ltd., OneSource, Quick Cleaning, Rentokil Initial Plc and The ServiceMaster Company.
